Practical Tips for Families
When planning your family adventure in Yunnan, a little preparation goes a long way.
The best time to visit is generally spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and comfortable for outdoor activities. Consider these key points:
Transportation:
- High-speed trains connect major cities, offering a comfortable and scenic option
- Hire a private driver for flexibility, especially when traveling between smaller towns
- Domestic flights are available for longer distances
Accommodation:
Look for family-friendly hotels or guesthouses in central locations. Many offer family rooms or connecting rooms for added convenience.
Food:
Food can be a concern when traveling with kids. While Yunnan cuisine is diverse and delicious, it can be spicy. Here are some tips:
- Always carry snacks and bottled water
- Look for restaurants with picture menus
- Try kid-friendly options like rice noodles, dumplings, and fresh fruit
Lastly, pack wisely. Bring:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Layers for changing temperatures
- Sun protection
- Basic first-aid kit
- Entertainment for long journeys (books, small travel games, etc.)
Remember, Yunnan's high-altitude areas like Shangri-La may require acclimatization. Take it slow and stay hydrated to help your family adjust comfortably.
Yunnan offers flexibility in how you plan your family adventure. Here are two sample itineraries to help you get started.
Option 1: The Full Yunnan Experience
- Start in Kunming
- Dali (2 hours from Kunming)
- Lijiang (1.5 hours from Dali)
- Shangri-La (1.25 hours from Lijiang)
- Return to Kunming (5 hours) or fly out from Shangri-La
Option 2: Alternative shortened version
- Arrive in Dali (direct high-speed train from Chongqing 7h)
- Lijiang
- Shangri-La - we skipped this part due to time constraints
- Kunming
- Depart - we tool 11-hour high-speed train to Beijing
Tips
- Adjust the itinerary based on your available time and interests
- Consider direct flights from Shangri-La if short on time
- High-speed trains connect major cities, offering scenic travel options
Remember, these are just suggestions. The beauty of Yunnan is that you can tailor your trip to fit your family's preferences and time constraints. Whether you choose to explore all these destinations or focus on a few, each place offers unique experiences that your family will cherish.
When planning, consider the travel times between locations. While the journeys aren't too long, you'll want to factor in enough time for your kids to rest and enjoy each place without feeling rushed.
When short on time, our personal preference is either to spend longer time in one place and shorten the other one to get just a taste of it, or skip it completely and focus on one place. It is much more enjoyable to split the trip 1 + 3 days, than 2 + 2!
Conclusion
Yunnan, China offers families an enchanting blend of natural wonders, cultural experiences, and kid-friendly adventures across destinations like Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and Shangri-La.
This guide provides practical tips for planning your family trip, including recommended activities for each location, travel logistics, and sample itineraries to help you make the most of your Yunnan adventure.
