Originally, we almost skipped Tiger Leaping Gorge on our Yunnan trip, thinking it would be too challenging with young children.
But like many things in China, tourism infrastructure here surprised us completely.
With escalators and well-maintained viewing platforms, this iconic gorge is surprisingly accessible for families with kids and even people with reduced mobility.
Here's everything you need to know about visiting with your family, based on our experience with our 1 and 3-year-old daughters.

On the way from Lijiang to Shangri-La
A cool way to integrate this trip into your Yunnan itinerary is to rent a private car – which with kids I would recommend doing anyway – and starting in Lijiang, go to the first bend of the Yangtze viewing point, later on continuing to Tiger Leaping Gorge. After that, instead of returning to Lijiang for another 2 hours, continue your journey to Shangri-La.
This way you can save a bit of time.
