A Colorful Journey
Welcome to Huangjueping Graffiti Art Street in Chongqing’s Jiulongpo District. This 1.25-kilometer street is packed with colorful graffiti, starting at the Huangjueping Railway Hospital and ending at the 501 Art Gallery. It’s the biggest graffiti art area in China - I highly recommend exploring it as it might be the exact opposite of what you have in mind when you think about China!
Getting there
You can get there conveniently by a brand new metro line 18, getting off at Huangjueping station, and take a leisourely walk and hop back on at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.
The area is definitely up-and-coming and what I am writing now might not be the case in few months time, but even though the place itself is hip, we didn't come across any bars and cafes - they might be there, but not densely packed on the main street.
The Big Art Project
The idea for this street came from Luo Zhongli, president of the Sichuan Fine Art Institute. More than 800 workers, students, and artists joined forces to create it, using 125,000 kilograms of paint and nearly 30,000 brushes. In 150 days, they painted 37 buildings, widened the roads, and set up 20 sculptures. They also tore down 9,000 meters of old pipelines and 2,700 square meters of buildings to make space for the new art.
Art and Life Together
Graffiti at Huangjueping isn’t just random wall scribbles. It’s a part of daily life. Each piece of graffiti was approved by the local residents. Artists and residents worked together, making sure the art fit well with the community. This collaboration has made the street a lively place where art and life mix perfectly.
For Art Lovers, big and small
Visitors to Huangjueping Graffiti Art Street can find shops selling paints, brushes, and other art supplies. It’s a great spot to buy unique souvenirs and take amazing photos with the vibrant murals.
Don't be put off by a thought that it is a place for artists only - anyone can buy a small set of paints (3 colour mix and a brush for 10 Yuan) and feel like a street artist! Our 3 year old Hanna absolutely loved it (and so did the by-passers taking photo of this up-and-coming little artist!
Final Thoughts
Huangjueping Graffiti Art Street is a live canvas where art meets daily life. Whether you love art or are just looking for something unique, this colorful street shows off Chongqing’s creative side. Come and experience this special blend of art and community!
